Arnold Thomson was a child born of recession. Not all will remember the recession of the late 1980s and early 1990s, triggered initially by Black Monday on Monday 19th October 1987, when stock markets crashed around the world.
The subsequent downturn caused some re-assessment and re-alignment within my old firm Shoosmiths & Harrison and the result was that my former partner and I took the Towcester practice and entered a brave new world with a new name on the door at 205 Watling Street on 1st May 1990.
All the loyal Towcester staff transferred to us and Jackie Balfe and Mike Fursey are still with us today. I enjoyed my earlier years with Shoosmiths and somehow there was always continuing contact and others joined us who had previously been with that firm: Christine Simkins almost from the outset in 1990; Sylvia McCarthy in 1997 until she retired in 2014; Brian Dobinson in 2000 until he retired in December 2005; Jo Stevens in 2009; Rachael McKnight in 2010 and Nick Bromwich merged his practice with ours in 2009 before he retired in 2010.
I do not believe anyone who says they enjoy every minute of their every working day but I have certainly been luckier than most and the last 25 years have been challenging. I have met a lot of interesting people. Both clients and professionals with whom I have come into contact have become friends. That is something on which even I, as a Scotsman, cannot put a price.
I take this opportunity to thank colleagues, clients and contacts for all the support shown to us over the years. Without you, we would not be here today.
We have always valued long term relationships with our clients and I believe we are fit to take matters forward. We incorporated the practice into a limited company in 2007. We opened an office in Market Harborough in 2012. My co-director Matt Hawkins who has been with us for over 12 years is a young 40 to my ageing 60. We have 8 other, very able, experienced lawyers and we have just appointed a Practice Director to help us take the firm and its service to its clients forwards into the next 25 years. I hope you will join us on that journey.
